Meet Erika

Taking the NYUL Young Professionals to the Next Level
Erika Beckles is NY native, who attended LaGuardia HS of Performing and Visual Arts and graduated from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Erika is the current Vice President of the New York Urban League Young Professionals. As a four year member, she has served in a leadership capacity for the last three years on the executive board. She was appointed the serve as the second female vice president of the chapter. Erika joined the organization with hopes of meeting like-minded individuals looking to advance the professional access of budding young urban professionals in the greater New York City area.
Prior to being elected Vice-President she served on the committees of: community service, communications, fund development and served as chair of the membership committee. Under her leadership as Membership Chair, the chapter increased member retention up to 40% and increase membership by 35%. This is one of the major factors that led the NY Urban League Chapter winning Chapter of Excellence in 2014.
She currently works as a Sr. Recruiter for Disney ABC and is responsible diversity and recruitment initiatives. She is currently creating Employee Resource Groups for the NY, Detroit and Chicago offices. She has also worked for major companies such as: NBCUniversal, HBO, AOL and Buzzfeed serving in various recruitment and diversity roles. Her passion lies within diversity and inclusion and assisting her community. Her various leadership roles within a Urban League have been varied serving in leadership capacity on the local, regional and national level. She is currently serving as a representative on the National Urban League Young Professionals - National Committees: Membership and Professional Development. Previously Erika was chosen to represent the Eastern Region on the National Awards committee in 2013. She was also acknowledged for her leadership and was presented as a distinguished National YP Member in 2013. In February 2016, Erika was given the city proclamation and acknowledged as a distinguished young leader in NY. February 13th was acknowledged as Erika Beckles Day during the Black and Latino Caucus in Albany, NY.
She has served in several leadership capacities outside of Urban League, serving Eastern Representative for National Collegiate Association, Co-lead for the Multicultural committee for Advertising Women of NY, Alumni Ambassador for LaGuardia HS Performing Arts, Executive Board Member for City Meal and Wheels Young Professionals, Young Professional Board Member for NYC Ties, Mentor and Board Member for Youth at Risks. Board Member for DanceIquail, WIMM- Women In Media Mentoring - mentor, chosen as a NYC City Wide Host and representative for Our Family Dinner. Responsible for executing two city wide events for a year and a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

As new York City expands the NYUL Young Professionals should too. As President, Erika will work to engage potential members from Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island via strategic partnerships with existing businesses and organizations in these communities. From Fort Greene Brooklyn to Long Island City Queens and up to University Heights in the Bronx communities are bursting with Young Professionals. Join Erika as she brings these young professionals into the fold.

One of the core strengths of the New York Urban League Young Professionals is it's partnship abilities . Erika has shown an ability to court large companies into relationships, such as Macys, resulting in the NYULYP "Fashion Night Out" Presented by Macys earlier this spring. This will be expanded to build lasting relationships, instead of one-time sponsorships. Erika will use her corporate expertise to target companies with philanthropic departments, creating a longterm union.

A longstanding member of the NYULYP, Erika has built and maintained relationships with Young Professional branches throughout the tri-state area. Under her presidency there will be a bi-annual Tri-State YP Forum. This forum will serve as an opportunity for members from NY, NJ, and Connecticut to connect via panel discussion.

In her professional life Erika has seen the fruitful result of group trips to vineyards on Long Island. She would bring this initiative to the NYULYP creating an annual NYULYP Hampton Wine Tour with the Long Island Young Professionals.
